Paris CNN —French President Emmanuel Macron openly discussed the possibility of sending European troops to Ukraine to help Kyiv win the war against Russia, a potential major escalation to the largest ground war Europe has seen since World War II. Macron did, however, announce that a new coalition would be created to supply Ukraine with medium-range and long-range missiles. Macron pointed out that Western democracies have gradually increased their support to levels unthinkable when the war began. Macron warned at the start of the summit that Russia would likely attack beyond Ukraine in the coming years, threatening Europe’s collective security. “This is a European war,” Macron said.

Lawmakers also want AI legislation to cover copyrighted material used by companies like OpenAI, backed by Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O), while EU countries say the bloc's current copyright rules offer sufficient protection. Copyright should be dealt with in the copyright law," she told Reuters, chiming with EU countries on the second matter.

As the war in Ukraine approaches 2023, Europe has never been as united against Vladimir Putin‘s Russia—nor as dependent on the U.S. for holding the Russian leader back. For years, the U.S.’s European allies struggled to reach a shared view of Mr. Putin, with France and Germany pushing the case for engaging with the authoritarian leader, over the building frustration of countries closer to Russia, who believed only determined resistance could stop him from pursuing his expansionist agenda in Europe’s east.
